Make sure that none of your security people try to be “heroes”. It is not worth it! Because of this, the most important thing about retail security is preventing people from breaking the law in the first place. It should not be about catching crooks, but about stopping them from stealing. The more obvious you make it that you’re watching them, the less likely they are to steal. Posting a security guard by the door, of course, is always a good idea. Would-be criminals will think twice when they see a big, beefy man standing there, calmly looking at them and surveying the rest of the store. Security cameras are also important. If you do need to prosecute someone for theft, they give you invaluable evidence. Without them, it can be almost impossible to prove your case.
